Panicked in the swim. Bike was mediocre. Running felt like being a giraffe on roller skates.

Summary sent to Fitz:
I did a tri in Sonomar on Sunday as Strava has indicated. Basically it's the mini-vineman.
Me, Lily, Tim, and Sinda did the sprint. Maggie (swim) and Sinda's kids - Willa (bike) and Alfie (run) did the relay.
Chang did the Olympic distance. It was notable for him because he hasn't raced since last year when he broke his collarbone.
A phew things - trying to tell you the TEXTURE and the KEY LEARNINGS. Funny how "the lamb" is both of those concepts, right?
Anyhow, on the technical side - There was a GD mandatory pre-race meeting on Saturday. They were at 2, 3, and 4 pm. We got there at 2:20 and weren't allowed in. Some other dude got there at 2:05 and couldn't get in. Finally at 3 it was a whole friggin basketball stadium of peeps "listening to the instructions". Even when I did the World's Toughest the pre-race sheesh wasn't so detailed and exhausting; I doubt Ironman is much more. Such a trip - especially so because the race isn't sanctioned by USAT and it is not a qualifier for Nationals. So funny the bizarre stressors that make sheesh more tense. You serially would have had the wig on trying to make it there on time (as an example, getting to the Golden Gate bridge was an act of God which delayed us 20 mins) and then sitting there for an hour.
- The race is complicated b/c it starts in the Russian River and ends in Windsor, 15 miles away. A point to point. So you had to have your running shoes and post-race stuff at T2 but had to pack up all of your pre-race and swim stuff right after the swim so they could haul your shit to T2. Then they had shuttle buses to take you back to T1 after.
- To solve the logistics - Maggie was doing just the swim so the plan was for her to take our sheesh, go back to the hotel and drive to T2. Serious pressure on her to get it right - make sure you get all the stuff, do you remember how to walk back to the hotel? Are you ok driving on these sketch roads? Lamb moment: making sure she internalized everything, empowering her, etc. On the emotional side - It was fucking Africa Hot; 93 degrees on Saturday! I got a creepy rental 1/2 mile away from the swim start. The place felt like the gd Shining. Russian River is the epicenter of "The Pride Community" as well. - we made our way down to the river to pre-swim the swim. The swim is like the Greenfield Tri but even shorter - 400 yards. Along the way we came up on a sort of mini-festival of "get your freak on peeps" playing music and rocking hula-hoops. The pot smoke was so heavy. This woman was literally trying to angle for us as we walked through. Fat dude wearing an extra small rainbow tank-top. Donna Summer's song "I feel love" thumping. LOL! LIfe's rich pageant! "Don't make eye contact!"
- We get to the river and it has lots of small stones. Naked and Afraid style, it hurts your feet to go barefoot.
The key lamb moment - the girls are complaining and totally intimidated by the swim. Maggie is threatening to bail on the whole thing. We finally get in the GD water and it's OSS - around 75 degrees. We were trying to swim down 200 yards and then come back. Multiple stops; Maggie "You guys are going too fast!". Essentially complaining the whole time. I'm doubting myself; maybe this isn't a good idea. (Let alone Lily riding 15 miles in a race on the $1000 Cervelo R3 I just got her). What did I "force" my kids in to doing? F! We finally get out of the water walking on the rocks like it is GD lava. Though we all agreed, the 400 yard swim is like a joke; so short.
- That said went back to the hotel, got dressed and walked back down through the freaks and the pot and got an oss dinner. So much fun.
Race day - They had a self-seated swim start where you would line up at your pace. Tim and I were at the front; the girls behind at the 1:30 pace mark. Gun goes off and we run down the lava rocks in to the water. I'm trying to keep up with Tim. Holy S? What's going on? There was a GD current! I was also stressed and didn't get any sleep; my Dad went to the hospital with Covid and pneumonia on Saturday so that was what I was primarily thinking of. I ended up totally hyperventilating and had to do the whole backstroke/"Fitzy hanging on the buoy" for a bit. I thought I saw Maggie and Lily swimming past me. The tiny swim from yesterday - I thought I would DNF!. Finally get out in transition and holy S, both girls are there. Maggie already passed her chip off to Willa and Lily is pushing her bike out! Maggie's swim: 7:37. Lily: 7:45. Me: 8:09!!! It took me 3 mins to catch Lily on the bike and 9 to catch Willa.
The run was an out and back and as I'm in the last 1/2 mile, holy S, there's Lily running out, smile from ear to ear. Finish the race and Maggie pops up with my gear bag. Totally nailed "the rest of her race" and took care of everything. Lily came racing around the finish line, smiling and so happy. Alfie, Sinda's son came sprinting down the finish line trying not to get beat by another little girl; he was going MACH.
Bottom line - all of the kids had "the best day ever". It was one of the highlight days with the kids. And, obviously, it underscores how important it is to encourage them to stretch themselves. Most incredible is how they performed under pressure. Just amazing.
Other notes
- A fellow tri-friend in the same age group, Dean was racing; he got on to the bike a bit before me. I caught up to him but then he just blatantly drafted for nearly the whole way. It was so annoying and uncool. I finally dropped him on a climb and he missed a turn.
- I had beaten Tim last year in November. This time he put 6 1/2 mins in to me. Most incredible - his run pace was 7:05 compared to my 8:03. Heck, Sinda ran 8:17 pace. We gotta maintain the run fitness! Chang fricking ran 7:25 pace for twice as long. Just amazing.

Commentary
The day prior, Chang and I went to race registration around 4:30. It was sunny but windy and remarkably cold. We went out to a great dinner with Derrill and Mary.
We got to sleep in an hour because of the return to standard time and got there in plenty of time.
We got in to the water to "warm up" in the really cold water - stated at 51, 53, or 57 degrees depending on who you heard it from. Regardless, it was bracingly cold and hurt your face.
Chang and I wore neoprene caps and socks as an extra measure of protection.
We spotted Jimmy, who is an excellent swimmer, and Chang suggested we follow him. It was a great idea. The swim started out calm and I followed Jimmy. Suddenly he stopped swimming, I guess he had hypoxia which was to be expected. I kept going. Suddenly my chest started feeling tight; breathing was shallow and rapid - I couldn't catch my breath. I was forced to turn on my back and just kick and try to relax. As I looked around, it was chaos. Seemingly hundreds of other swimmers facing the same plight. I flipped around and could swim for a dozen strokes or so but then needed to flip over again. The orange buoy we had to go around on our right seemed to never get closer. Apparently there was a significant current coming south west at us while we were trying to go north east. I finally made the turn and the current going back towards land was better. I came out of the water; it should have taken about 12 minutes but my time was over 23! Chang was right in front of me as well. Jimmy was able to recover and did an amazing sub 16 min swim, beating me by 7 1/2 minutes! What a lead!
At transition, the wonderful booties that kept my feet warm were very difficult to pull off. So much so, I had to sit down. I lost nearly 1 1/2 minutes in T1
to Chang in T1!
On the bike my heart rate was pegged at 160; I could not relax. Chang got me by another 1:24.
On the run, my heart rate was still 160; I couldn't recover. And I couldn't extend, either. I resolved to just finish.
In the end, Jimmy beat me by over 10 minutes and Chang by over 9. This was a race where I was just trying to survive and complete. I wasn't really racing.
It was very humbling.
